Food and Friends Program
The Food and Friends Program at St. John Bosco Secondary School has won a number of grants and special recognition over the past few years. As a result of the program and the leadership of Christina Guest, students are provided with free breakfast, snack, and lunch on a daily basis. Students also have the opportunity to learn culinary skills by helping cook meals for their peers. In addition to providing students with healthy meals, the breakfast and lunch programs help foster community and teamwork.
Horticultural Therapy - The Julien Project
Students at St. John Bosco Secondary School have the opportunity to participate in the Julien Project at St. Ignatius Jesuit Centre. Students from our Food and Nutrition class and Leadership class participate in the gardening program one morning per week. In the fall, students learn what it means to profit from the ‘fruits of their labour’ as they learn to harvest, preserve and can fruits and vegetables right from the garden. Students learn how to close down the garden for the winter season and complete the ‘Safe Food Handling Course’ through Public Health. In the spring, students have the opportunity to participate in the Julien Project again. The uniqueness of this program is that the skills the students learn can be transferred to their home and work-life. We are truly blessed to have this special relationship within the community.
A variety of physical activites are offered during lunch in our gymasium to support and promote healthy active living.
